Obituary

HEATH SPRINGS, SC:::::::::::Mrs. Beatrice McAteer “Granny B” Bowers, age 95,went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 7, 2017. She was born February 23, 1921 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Roy McAteer and Brite Marz McAteer. Mrs. Bowers was first married to the late Thomas J. Roberts who was killed in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. She later married the late John E. Bowers Jr. who died in 1990. Mrs. Bowers retired from Springs Industries after 40 years of service. She loved to fish, enjoyed NASCAR racing and dirt track racing at the Lancaster Motor Speedway. She loved to cook and was famous for her homemade biscuits, cornbread and Pineapple Upside Cake. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she loved her church family and her Sunday School class.

Mrs. Bowers is survived by a son, Eddie Bowers and his wife, Julie of Heath Springs; a daughter, Kitty Woodruff of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Eric Bowers (Heather), Mark Bowers (Kristen), Tim Woodruff (Elyse) and Tammy Franklin (Jamie); eight great grandchildren, Eóin, Evan, Amon, Belle, Kylee, Brayden, Braxton and baby girl due in April; a special nephew, David Sims and his wife Patti of West Columbia and a niece, Susan Wells and her husband Earl of Heath Springs.

Mrs. Bowers is preceded in death by a son, Thomas J. Roberts, Jr.; a brother, John D. McAteer; two sisters, Mattie Lou Knight and Ruth Sims; and a special niece, Terry Sims.

The Celebration of Life Graveside Funeral Service for Mrs. Bowers will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery by Rev. Buddy Thomas. The family will receive friends following the service.
