Obituary

LANCASTER, SC~ Mr. Robert “R.L.” Leroy Goodman, age 86, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at his home. He was born June 21, 1931 in Lancaster, a son of the late James E. Goodman and Ruth Sawyer Goodman. He was first married to the late Wanda B. Goodman and is currently married to Carolyn Plyler Goodman for the past 38 years. Mr. Goodman was graduate of Lancaster High School and was drafted to the United States Army in 1951 and later transferred to the Air Force due to his high AQE scores. He was a graduate of the NCO Academy at CAFB, Fort Worth, TX. He was also a graduate of the 8th Air Force NCO Academy at Westover Air Force Base, MA. Mr. Goodman retired as a Senior Master Sergeant (E8) with the United States Air Force after 21 years. His military career began in 1951, serving during the Korean War with the 11th Bomb Wing, 26 Bomb SQ. He was the crew chief of a B-52 bomber for 4 years and served as the Recovery Team Chief. Mr. Goodman served on mobility for many years, being able to travel to many parts of the world within a 15-minute notice. He deployed to North Africa twice and once to Burton Wood England. He served during the Vietnam War with the 68th Bombardment Wing (Strategic Air Command) at Anderson Air Force Base Guam as Aircraft Maintenance Superintendent and as NCO in charge of the B-52 Bomber branch. His second career was operating a truck garage for 20 years for R.H. Collins of Lancaster. Mr. Goodman was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lancaster.

Mr. Goodman is survived by his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Gerald W. Goodman (Jerry) and his wife, DD, and Gregory Sears (Greg), both of Austin, TX; two daughters, Linda Armstrong and her husband, Larry, of Myrtle Beach, and Bobbie Meier of Lancaster; two brothers, Maurice (Joe) Goodman and his wife, Judy, of Catawba and Charles E. Goodman and his wife, Minnie, of New Ellenton, SC; a sister, Carol Dry and her husband, Roland, of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a special friend he considered his adopted son, Danny Allen.

Mr. Goodman was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Walter D. Goodman and James H. Goodman; a sister, Nettie Ruth Hall; and a son, Timothy Shay Sears.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Goodman will be 3:00 pm Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lancaster by Pastor Jimmy Lambert and Pastor Jerald Starnes. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 3:00 pm, one hour prior to the service, in the church sanctuary and suggest memorial contributions be made to First Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, PO Box 256, Lancaster, SC 29721.
