Obituary

LANCASTER, SC ~ Miss Annie Louise Sowell, age 73, passed away Monday, March 12, 2018. Ann was born December 21, 1944 in Lancaster, the daughter of the late Dorch Lee Sowell and Susie Laura Laney Sowell West. Ann is survived by three brothers, John Lee Sowell and his wife, Carol, Billy Frank Sowell and his wife, Donna, and Gilliam R. Sowell and his wife, Marcine; a sister, Betty L. Cauthen; and twelve nieces and nephews, John Lee Sowell, Jr., Tim Cauthen, Tony Cauthen, Terri Cauthen Lee, Tracy Cauthen, Tammy C. Dewar, Angela Marie Paul, John David Paul, Jr., Victor Todd Sowell, Gilliam R. Sowell, Jr., Hope Sowell Sims, and Deirdra Phillips. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bill Cauthen, two great nephews, her paternal grandparents, Goodman Frank Laney and Lula Josey Laney and her maternal grandparents, Jack Sowell and Cannie Horton Sowell.

Ann was always quick to do for someone else. She always thought of others more than herself. Small things gave her pleasure. She never had children of her own, but always delighted in the children and grandchildren of her brothers and sister when their children were younger. She always remembered everyone’s birthday. Her “Baby” was her little dog, Randy Lee and she spoiled him greatly. If Randy Lee could not go with her to some places, she would have rather stayed at home. Ann loved movies, especially Disney type movies of children, animals and cartoon characters. She loved Christmas, angels, and crafts. She had been known to make Christmas gifts for all the children in the family. She treasured an old sweater that belonged to her Mother, Susie. Ann had always been a little shy but came out a lot when she moved into her own apartment at The Lancaster Manor. For years, she took care of everyone’s children, her stepfather’s sister; her stepfather and later her Mother. If someone was traveling, Ann would put an angel on that person to keep them safe. Ann was a Christian and always trusted in the Lord. Two of her best friends were Ms. Carolyn Cauthen and Ms. Phyllis Prossitt. Ann was very much loved by everyone.

Ann always attended church regularly. Her niece, Terri Cauthen Lee, would pick her up and take her to church. She was a charter member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, but after her Mother, Susie passed away, she moved her membership to Camp Creek Baptist Church.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Ann will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Camp Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Randy Mellichamp. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, March 16, 2018 at Burgess Funeral Home. At other times, friends and family are welcome at the home of Gilliam and Marcine Sowell. Flowers are always welcomed; however, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210; Camp Creek Baptist Church, 998 Potter Road, Lancaster, SC 29720 or Hospice of South Carolina, 311-B North Main Street, Suite A, Lancaster, SC 29720.
