FORT MILL, SC ~ Mrs. Catherine Ray Averitt, age 94, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill with Meningeal brain tumor. She was born July 27, 1923 in Knoxville, TN, the daughter of the late Roy Raymond Ray and Elizabeth Ketchum Ray and was the wife of the late Richard Reid Averitt. Mrs. Averitt retired from J C Penney Credit Department. She was an avid Iris grower and was past President of the Middle Tennessee Iris Society. In 1985, she was instrumental in establishing the Tennessee State Iris Garden at Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville, TN. The garden was dedicated to Catherine and Richard Averitt.

Mrs. Averitt is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Groom Edwards (James) of Lexington, NC, Jan Groom and Linda Groom Hartman of Fort Mill; grandchildren, Kevin Hicks (Pam), Kim Hicks Wright (Denny), Kenny Hicks and Kurt Hicks (Lauren); and great grandchildren, Jordan, Jake and Joseph Hicks.

Mrs. Averitt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and three brothers, Charles Ray, Paris Ray and Jack Ray.
