Obituary

LANCASTER, SC - Mr. Pierce Hunter Hegler, III, (better known as Joe), age 74, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018. He was born April 21, 1944 in Lancaster, the son of the late Pierce H. “Buster” Hegler, Jr. and Hazel Ackerman Hegler and is the husband of Deborah Bosdell Hegler. Joe was a graduate of Lancaster High School, Class of 1962. He was a proud member of the LHS State Championship Football team, 1959. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from Wofford College, Class of 1966. He studied law for one year at the University of South Carolina. He taught and coached at Chesterfield High School for two years. Joe left teaching and began his 35-year career in the banking industry beginning with The Bank of Lancaster, later becoming First National Bank, South Carolina National Bank, Wachovia Bank and now Wells Fargo Bank. He studied banking at the SC Banker’s Association School of Banking at Louisiana State University and at the American Bankers Association at the University of Oklahoma. Joe retired from Wells Fargo in 2004 as Vice President and Small Business Banker for Lancaster and York Counties. He enjoyed working with his customers. He believed that “regardless of the size of the bank, the most important thing people want is a one-on-one relationship with their banker. They want someone they could rely on and trust, and that’s always the most important thing to me.”

Joe was a member of First A.R.P. Church and served as Deacon. He served on the Board for Wells Fargo Bank, Carolina Community Actions, Sertoma International, Lancaster Convalescent Center and was past member of the Lancaster Home Builders Association. He loved traveling, baseball, the Wofford Terriers and the Carolina Panthers.

Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah Bosdell Hegler. He had no children but six nieces and nephews and eleven great nieces and nephews that he loved as his own.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Hegler will be 12:00 noon Thursday, November 29, 2018 at First A.R.P. Church of Lancaster by Rev. Kyle Sims.

The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall and suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Lancaster County Library, 313 S. White Street, Lancaster, SC 29720 or the American Heart Association, 128 S Tryon St #1588, Charlotte, NC 28202.
