Obituary

LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Judith Howell York, age 72, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at her home. She was born January 6, 1946 in Raleigh, NC, a daughter of Oma Austin Howell and the late Sherwood Hudson Howell and is the wife of Ron York. She loved playing basketball for Apex High School. Judith received her Associates Degree from Wingate College and her Bachelors Degree from East Carolina University. She retired from the Lancaster County School District as a teacher. Her whole life was teaching. She cared about each child teaching to their individual needs. She excelled with “at risk” children, providing them with structure and unconditional love. She was known as a good disciplinarian and her students met her high expectations of them. Judith also enjoyed traveling the world with Ron having visited most of the US in the early years of their marriage. Judith grew up in Salem Baptist Church where she played the piano/organ and where she and Ron were married. Judith is a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Mrs. York is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ron York; her mother; Oma Howell; a son, Ryan York of Rock Hill; a daughter, Suzanne Wingard (Tripp) of Orangeburg; a special granddaughter who knew her as “Granna” and was her “BFTF” best friend in the family, Zoe Wingard; two sisters, Sandra Hitchcock (Tim) of Cary, NC and Marsha Massey (Tommy) of Zebulon, NC, and a brother, Sherwood Hudson Howell II (Diana) of Holly Springs, NC.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. York will be 2:00 pm Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Covenant Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jim Osteen. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

An additional Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. York will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Salem Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Bert Welch and Dr. Jeff Beckett. Burial will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
