Rev. Coit Eugene Auten



LANCASTER, SC~ Rev. Coit Eugene Auten, age 96, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home. He was born January 15, 1922, a son of the late Robert Lee Auten and Luna Winkler Auten and Leona Jenkins Auten. He was the husband of the late Annie “Ann” Broome Auten. Rev. Auten attended Wingate College, Wake Forest College and was the first male graduate of Queens College. He was also a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. His pastorates include Morris Field Baptist Church, Bostic Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church in York, SC, Center Grove Baptist Church, White Bluff Baptist Church, and served as interim at many churches. Rev. Auten served in the United States Army Air Corp, was a WWII Vet, a B-25 Tail Gunner, and Staff Sergeant with 822nd Bomb Squad. He was also a substitute teacher for the Lancaster County School District for over 30 years. After retirement, Rev. Auten served as a deacon of First Baptist Church Lancaster and was the teacher of the Coit E. Auten Sunday School Class.

Rev. Auten is survived by two daughters, Cynthia A. Jonas and her husband, Gadsden of York, SC and Kathy A. Roberts and her husband, Kim “Hoppy” of Heath Springs, SC; five grandchildren, Brent Jonas and his wife, Deborah, Meredith Clinton and her husband, Corey, Stephanie Jonas, Katie Roberts and Bobby Roberts; five great grandchildren, Pete Jonas, Helena Jonas, Colin Clinton, Brenna Clinton and Anna Jonas; and two sisters-in-law, Frances J. Auten and Selba S. Auten.

Rev. Auten was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Annie Broome Auten; two brothers, Charles R. Auten and Jerry P. Auten; and a sister, Blanche Auten Wilkinson.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Rev. Auten will be 2:30 pm Sunday, January 28, 2018 at First Baptist Church Lancaster by Rev. Dr. Rick Auten, Rev. Randy Hatcher, and Rev. Don Waldrop. Burial will follow at 5:00 pm Sunday at Lakeview Memory Garden in York, SC.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm- 7:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Burgess Funeral Home and suggest memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 670, Lancaster, SC 29721 and Hospice of Lancaster 901 W. Meeting St., Suite 201, Lancaster, SC 29720.
